Dance : Audition Plan

Even though we haven't got dancer's yet, due to two not being able to attend the audition date and the rest not getting back to us, I thought I'd explain what we planned to do for auditions anyway as we did put effort into creating a plan.

  • Make introductions : introduce ourselves to the dancers and allow them to introduce themselves to each other
  • Do an improvisation exercise : this was inspired by Rachel's workshop. This involves us giving keywords from the poem, such as panic or breathlessness, and letting them interpret them into movement. We can then pick out our favourite movements and get inspiration for the final dance.
  • After a short break, we would pair the dancers up. These pairs would be swapped around so everyone gets a go to work with each other. This allows us to see who has the best chemistry together - something that is very important for our dance as the characters are deeply involved emotionally and physically with each other.  If the chemistry was not good, the dance would simply not work the way we wanted to.
  • We would explain our idea to them in full and mention our own ideas and what we want to get out of it. We would also emphasise that this is a collaboration so they can put their own spin on things as much as they like at this point. Then they would be allowed to go off and create their own short performance based off the information we told them.
  • After watching all the performances, we would then talk about which movements we really liked with all the pairings. Then we would have a look at who we thought worked best together - both in performance and chemistry. These would then be the two that we chose.
Hopefully we'll be able to use this plan eventually and I think even if we don't it will be useful for working with the final two dancers, as we can take parts out of it to develop the dance with them.
