Dance : Alternative to Filming Underwater

We have been worried that filming underwater will not be accessible for us based on the time limit and our budget, so have been trying to come up with a realistic plan if we cannot carry this through. Laura linked me to a technique known as 'dry for wet' which may come in very useful an alternative route for us to film in or a back up plan if we chose the underwater option.

Dry for wet is a film technique in which smoke, coloured filters, and/or lighting effects are used to simulate a character being underwater while filming on a dry stage.

Here are some examples of dry for wet in mainstream cinema :

Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring

The Spirit

This clip shows behind the scene on the underwater parts of The Spirit. You can see that there is no actual water used, but green screen and fans.

Basically what we would need for this option is :

  • A studio
  • Fans
  • Good slow motion cameras
  • Green Screen
After Effects would also need to be used to add movement such as bubbles.

I found this video which gives an example of the process.
