Dance : Underwater Works

We looked into other works that have featured underwater sections in them, to find some inspiration for our own film. Hopefully some of these might give us ideas and help in how to carry it out.

Solipsist // Andrew Thomas Huang

I like all the colours used in this short experimental film, and also the use of many different materials. It begins like a normal dance routine but then the material seems to engulf both dancers, resulting in interesting visuals. This is when the piece becomes under water - esque. The material is designed to look like fish - like things, and I particularly like the use of light, movement and sound. I think the use of movement and visual imagery throughout is very beautiful and strange. There might be something we can incorporate from this into our own.

We also spent some time looking at the behind the scenes of Solipsist to get a better idea of how they carried out certain aspects of it.

Laura suggested we could maybe get a tank and film it for bubbles and the water feel and then overlaying this over the dance video to make it appear underwater. Obviously we would have to use other effects as well, but this is something we could maybe test out in the future to see if it could work.

Underwater Dance Scene From Joy - Fireball

I found this video when searching for underwater dance on Youtube. I showed it to the rest of the group and we thought it was interesting how they could have used slow motion to get the movement of being underwater. The dancer may be jumping up and down in slow motion by the look of it. The water effect has been clearly added in after effects etc. and is given off by the movement in the coloured lines. However this seems very cheesy and unrealistic and not a look we want, but maybe we can use the slow motion technique and a not so out there after effected approach. We can always test this as well.

I looked at several more videos to get an idea of how movement is shown underwater.

Clorox Commercial (Mermaid)

Tata Shoe Commercial

(Too cheesy for what we are going for but incorporates a dance in an underwater way so useful to watch anyways)
